How does Sculptra® Aesthetic Work

Sculptra® Aesthetic is composed of poly -L-lactic acid, an artificial material. It is not made from human or animal sources and does not require a skin test. Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible, harmless, and biodegradable material that has been widely used for many years in surgical products. The effects are long-lasting and have been shown in multiple clinical studies to last up to two years after the initial treatment session.

As a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra® Aesthetic  is different. It works with your body within the deep dermis, rather than topically, to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.1-3 As the Sculptra® Aesthetic  PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.

 

Who Can Receive Sculptra® Aesthetic?

Sculptra® Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) is indicated for use in people with healthy immune systems as a single regimen for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in which deep dermal grid pattern (cross-hatch) injection technique is appropriate.

Sculptra® Aesthetic should not be used by people that are allergic to any ingredient of the product or have a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. Safety has not been established in patients who are pregnant, lactating, breastfeeding, or under 18 years of age.

 

What to Expect when being treated with Sculptra® Aesthetic

Collagen stimulators are used to diminish facial wrinkles by helping to restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin. Results appear gradually over the treatment regime (typically three injections over the course of three to four months) and can last up to two years. Sculptra® Aesthetic is injected in small amounts below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. Topical anesthetic agents are generally used to minimize discomfort from the procedure. Sculptra® Aesthetic  takes time to gradually correct the depression in the skin and will require several treatments to achieve desirable results. Patients with severe facial fat loss may require three to six treatment sessions at four to six week intervals in order to achieve the desired results. Dr. Mary Pritikin always tells her patients that immediately after the injection process, the results will look terrific. But because the active ingredient needs time to develop into new collagen, there will be a period of time when the product needs time to cultivate, and those receiving Sculptra®Aesthetic need to be aware that this product works best over time.

 

 

Sculptra® Aesthetic Side Effects and Risks

SinceSculptra® Aesthetic does not contain any human or animal components, no allergy testing is needed prior to treatments.

Side effects reported include injection site pain, redness, bruising, tenderness, itching and lumps, bleeding or swelling. Small bumps under the skin can sometimes be noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Larger lumps, with or without inflammation, have also been reported. The types and duration of side effects may vary. If you are experiencing side effects, talk to your doctor.
