Botox

What is it?

Botox is one of the most well-known and widely used neuromodulators or prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.  It’s an injection procedure that involves very low doses of botulinum toxin in specific areas of the face. Almost no redness or swelling occurs following a Botox® injection. No anesthesia is required and the entire procedure takes no more than 10 minutes.

How Botox® Works:

Botox® blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox® relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. The contraction of the muscle is the culprit causing the wrinkles. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Botox® injections have been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat many ophthalmological and neurological disorders. Each year, thousands of patients receive Botox® treatments to reverse the signs of aging AND to treat hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating.

Who Can Receive Botox®

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be.Botox® is available to treat these wrinkles on both women and men.

Those with medical conditions such as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, may be at increased risk of serious side effects including difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing from typical doses of Botox® Cosmetic.

What to Expect During Treatment

After visiting PritiSkin’s Chicago office for a Botox® cosmetic treatment, patients may immediately return to work and resume normal activities. The Botox® injection will gradually take effect in three to five days. It is important that you keep your head elevated (e.g., do not lie down or bend over) for approximately two to three hours after a Botox® Cosmetic injection.

For the crow’s feet area, Dr. Mary will inject 3 areas of the orbicularis oculi, the muscle that frames the side of the eye. This will be repeated on the orbicularis oculi muscle on the other eye. For the frown lines area, Dr. Mary will administer 5 injections into muscles in your forehead—1 in the procerus muscle and 4 in the corrugator muscles.

Some patients report that being injected with Botox® Cosmetic feels like a pinch. Dr. Mary may use ice to numb the treatment area. If you are concerned about discomfort,  a topical numbing cream is also available before administering your treatment
