Botox is one of the most well-known and widely used neuromodulators or prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. It’s an injection procedure that involves very low doses of botulinum toxin in specific areas of the face. Almost no redness or swelling occurs following a Botox® injection. No anesthesia is required and the entire procedure takes no more than 10 minutes.
How Botox® Works:
Botox® blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox® relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. The contraction of the muscle is the culprit causing the wrinkles. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.
Botox® injections have been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat many ophthalmological and neurological disorders. Each year, thousands of patients receive Botox® treatments to reverse the signs of aging AND to treat hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating.
Benefits of Botox®
Botox® Cosmetic is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries (Known as Vistabel® outside of North America).Botox® Cosmetic has a record of experience that aesthetic specialists know and trust. And, the safety and efficacy of Botox® Cosmetic have been evaluated in both Allergan sponsored clinical trials as well as in 417 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals. You can be sure that you will receive one of the safest fillers available. Botox® effectively treats crow’s feet around your eyes and also frown lines.
Who Can Receive Botox®
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be.Botox® is available to treat these wrinkles on both women and men.
Those with medical conditions such as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, may be at increased risk of serious side effects including difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing from typical doses of Botox® Cosmetic.
What to Expect During Treatment
After visiting PritiSkin’s Chicago office for a Botox® cosmetic treatment, patients may immediately return to work and resume normal activities. The Botox® injection will gradually take effect in three to five days. It is important that you keep your head elevated (e.g., do not lie down or bend over) for approximately two to three hours after a Botox® Cosmetic injection.
For the crow’s feet area, Dr. Mary will inject 3 areas of the orbicularis oculi, the muscle that frames the side of the eye. This will be repeated on the orbicularis oculi muscle on the other eye. For the frown lines area, Dr. Mary will administer 5 injections into muscles in your forehead—1 in the procerus muscle and 4 in the corrugator muscles.
Some patients report that being injected with Botox® Cosmetic feels like a pinch. Dr. Mary may use ice to numb the treatment area. If you are concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream is also available before administering your treatment
Side Effects and Risks of Botox®
Three percent of patients experienced eyelid drooping in the frown lines studies and 1% of patients experienced eyelid swelling in the crow’s feet studies. Other possible side effects include: dry mouth; discomfort or pain at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight and dry eyes; and allergic reactions.
Cost of Botox®
The cost of Botox® varies depending on how many syringes are required to obtain optimal correction. Dr. Mary Pritikin along with our clinic manager Mira can personalize a treatment plan that fits your time and budget during your consultation. Because Botox® Cosmetic is classified as a cosmetic treatment, it is not covered by health insurance. Patients who cannot pay up front for treatment often utilize personal loans or lines of low-interest credit to cover the cost of treatment so they can pay back the investment over time. Please feel free to discuss with us your financing options.
